Nuorgam is the Gateway to the Arctic Ocean

Norway and the Arctic Ocean are just a stone’s throw from Nuorgam. Norway is a whole world of its own throughout the year; experience small fishing villages, strong Sea Sámi culture, and the idyllic Finnish culture in Bugøynes, Little Finland.

A day trip to Norway can travel for instance, from Nuorgam via Varangerbotn to the town of Vadsø. From there you can continue your journey all the way up to Hamningberg where you will experience landscape that looks more like a moonscape. At Vadsø you can combine your journey with a cruise to Kirkenes on the Hurtigruten ferry and return to Nuorgam by car.

We recommend visiting the Sámi museums in Polmak or Varanger and a shopping trip to Tana (Sámi Sölv – Sámi jewellery boutique and handicraft exhibition).

Polar Night

In Lapland you can experience twilight or the Polar Night – a time when the sun doesn’t rise above the horizon at all. The Polar Night in Nuorgam lasts for over 50 days – from the end of November through to mid-January (26 November – 16 January). The Polar Night is a twilight time, but the moonlight and glistening white snowscapes together with the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) will light up Lapland’s magnificent snowy nature before your eyes. The Polar Night paints the horizon with spectacular colours and the daily Blue Moment is a stunning experience.

Winter Fishing for Arctic Char

There are plenty of fell highland lakes close to Nuorgam on both sides of the Finland – Norway border. You can choose a different lake for each trip, and the Arctic char here has a fine red belly. The best lakes on the Norwegian side of the border are close to the main road, so these are easy to reach on skis. We sell maps of Norwegian ice fishing spots. If you yearn for larger waters, take a day trip to the Arctic Ocean where you can even experience sea fishing during the winter months. Why not try a red king crab safari?

Snowmobiling

Wintertime makes Nuorgam a superior place for snowmobile riding due to its outstanding location and many different routes. You can choose snowmobile day trips from a short ice fishing trip to an Arctic Ocean safari covering hundreds of kilometres.

The snowmobile routes traverse varying terrain: open fell highland, coniferous forest zone, frozen swamps between the rugged fells and the great ice of the frozen Tenojoki River. A theme for each snowmobiling day can be chosen according to the terrain.

If you want, we can organise local guides to order to accompany you on your day trip or take you in a sled pulled by a snowmobile for a trip into the fell highlands. The village of Nuorgam has fuel sales and a service station, and a snowmobile repair shop that also sells spare parts.

  • You can purchase permits for the Finnish side of the border online at Eraluvat.fi.
  • No special permits are needed for riding a snowmobile on the Norwegian side of the border

Husky Safari in Arctic Nature

The Husky Farm is located on the Norwegian side of the Tenojoki River in Tana. Meet the husky guides at the farm and get to pet these lovely Arctic animals. You can experience controlling your own team of huskies, taking you across the expansive, silent fell highland snowscapes and pristine Arctic nature on the shores of the Tenojoki River. To round off the safari, hot drinks and snacks will be served by the campfire.

Northern Lights

Northern Lights are the most spectacular colour show of northern nature. They are light phenomena appearing as colourful, dancing and quickly moving lights that change form, and can be viewed in the northern regions in dark and clear night skies.

Northern Lights can be observed starting from the last week in August, when the nights start to darken. Northern Lights can be viewed through to mid-April, following which the nights become too bright to spot these light phenomena. The more north you travel, the more often you will see the Northern Lights, and they are often visible throughout the night.

The Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) are natural phenomena that can be forecasted on the basis of solar wind activity and of course the weather. The following websites help you to estimate when the Northern Lights are visible.

Available August – April

Arctic nature

Nuorgam is surrounded by spectacular, open and Arctic nature that is astonishingly diverse, and the Nuorgam Holiday Village is an outstanding base for exploring the Arctic wilderness. The pure nature and clean natural waters with oxygen-rich air will definitely charm you.

The environment is treeless tundra wilderness, given its own character due to proximity of the Arctic Ocean and the mountain birch at its own extremes. Kaldoaivi, Finland’s northernmost roadless wilderness area is just around the corner and provides excellent opportunities for watching nature.

The fauna is plentiful in this area. In Norway and on the shores of the Arctic Ocean you can see species you will not find in Finland. You can observe a number of species of wading birds, and there are a few rare species, such as the extremely rare European freshwater flounder and Myricaria germanica with its only known occurrence in Finland being Pulmakijärvi.

You can spot at least the following species in the immediate vicinity.

ANIMALS

Norway lemming, mountain hare, reindeer, elk, fox. Special species of moths and butterflies.

FLORA

Cloudberry, yellow vetchling, bilberry, mountain birch, Myricaria germanica, lingonberry, mountain bearberry, marsh-marigold, dwarf birch, dwarf willow, crowberry, Habenaria straminea Fernald, Alpine enchanter’s nightshade, mountain bladder fern

Fell Highland Skiing

Equally as important as skiing in Nuorgam is viewing the open snowscapes of the fell highlands, feeling the true power of nature and enjoying tranquillity. There is no real need to dress in tight-fitting skiing wear or a sweatband. You will feel naturally vitalised, far from everyday hustle and bustle and mass tourism destinations.

You can easily access the fell highlands directly from Nuorgam Holiday Village. The immediate vicinity has a marked and maintained (no lighting) Fielbmajärvi cross-country skiing track, taking you easily to Skaidijärvi. There is also a skiing track taking you to the campfire shelter owned and maintained by the Holiday Village.

Nuorgam Holiday Village is also a great base for departing or return journeys if you are heading for the Nuorgam–Pulmankijärvi–Sevettijärvi cross-country skiing route.
